Seems like every Kenyan you meet is a Nurse or CNA or LPN or related. Even some former Alliance A-students.

Theres nothing wrong with nursing, its an honourable

profession. So what if every Kenyan is a Nurse? So long as they are earning their keep and getting a slice of middle class America, kudos to them! This African mentality of oh I am from Alliance so I can't do nursing is what is killing our people! Other cultures with a top notch work ethic will do WHATEVER it takes to make the dollar. Its all about earning your keep, bottom line.

I did not say it as a put down. I am just saying it seems to be very popular. In Kenya if you told someone that you graduated from Alliance with an A and you now want to be a nurse at Kenyatta Hospital they would laugh impossibly at this.

Even if I am not a nurse or anything close to it :), I noticed quite a bit of discussion here recently about nursing. So i'm just giving an FYI to my fellow bakenya!

I am not a nurse either

But I totally agree with you. Free education, and a guaranteed job. How many other professions can offer you this?

I know Kenyan nurses who are now

working as cardiac surgery nurses. They are earning six figures and have had good experiences working in several hospitals across the states. They have comfortable lives. Nursing here is a univesity degree course. Those who are laughing at nurses don't know what its like these days. The nurses they laughed at from Kenyatta are the ones who are getting papers, moving to the UK and US and supporting their families back home. How many other professions in the world are so practical that you are in demand globally? Can all the lawyers that have graduated from UON or India do this? No, they are wallowing in poverty and joblessness. How many other professionals at home can just pick up and get a work permit abroad? We really need to step out of our antiquated ways of thinking about what is a good profession and what is not.

Why be a nurse when you can be a doctor?

That is the million dollar question nobody has quite answered fully.

Thats not the issue

Why be simple Old'un when you could be running and owning a Fortune 500 company? We could ask those questions of everyone! Why be a doctor when you could be a surgeon? Why be a plain old cardiologist when you could be a neurosurgeon?

It is precisely the issue and here is why

If an Alliance student graduated with an A and was to go to UoN, most likely they would be headed to Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, Computer Science or similar in most cases.

If an American student graduated and scored a 1540 on their SATs and they were interested in the medical field, most likely they would be headed to do Medicine, Neurosurgery, Pharmacy etc at a good school. It is highly highly unlikely they would choose Nursing!

So why must Kenyans who can easily be doctors decide to be nurses??? There are lots of scholarships and loans available even for international students if people search hard enough!! My point is capable people should not settle for mediocrity regardless of how lucrative that mediocrity is.

Medocirity is RELATIVE

What do you do for a living Old'un? Why don't we start there

Not nursing! :-) But you are right mediocrity is relative. If someone wants to be a nurse that is their business. I was just voicing my opinion. Personally I would not recommend it to someone who can do better.
