The Civil Society [Kenya Human Rights Network] Statement on Hon. Michuki policy of suspending the rule of law and attacks at the people's Freedoms of Assembly and Expression
The Human Rights and Democracy Movements in Kenya under the Kenya Human Rights Movement condemn the illegal and unconstitutional orders made by Internal Security Minister, Mr. Michuki to the Provincial administration to block any political assemblies in their respective areas of jurisdiction. Mr. Michuki who seems to work hard to earn from President Mwai Kibaki a medal for returning Kenya to the old dark days of repression is a sworn anti-reformer who has helped to expose the true character of the Kenyan President who appointed him in the first place.
We therefore call upon the President to explain to Kenyans why he has maintained Mr. Michuki as the Minister for Internal Security even as the Minister continues to precipitate lawlessness by breaking the law and undermining the constitution which safeguards the rights of Kenyans. Has Kenyan reverted to the rule of the jungle or are we still being governed by the Law?
It is unfortunate that Mr. Michuki wants Kenyans to forget the fact that his orders were rendered irrelevant by the 1997 IPPG administrative and legal reforms which only required that those requisitioning meetings only place a notification with the OCS.
Secondly as the Human Rights and Democracy Movement, we are shocked by the cynical lies by the Mr. Michuki that he was part and parcel of the struggle for Kenya's second liberation! We are insulted by Mr. Michuki's attempts to conceal his real identity as a die hard dictator who suffers from his infamous history as a colonial bully and vicious anti-democrat during the struggle for Kenya's second liberation.
If Mr. Michuki thinks that our collective memory as the Human rights and democracy advocates in this country has failed us, we challenge him to tell Kenyans where, when and how he was ever involved in the struggle for democracy and human rights in Kenya. Mr. Michuki is an opportunist who has been riding on the back of the victories of the struggles of Kenyans for change with no intention whatsoever of ever seeing Kenyans enjoy their rights and freedom. It is no wonder he is a strong defender of the current constitution which has been used to oppress and deny Kenyans their fundamental rights and freedoms. We urge Kenyans not to concede an inch of their hard won democratic space and freedom.
The Kenya Human Rights Network strongly supports all democratic forces that are working towards the repeal of the current dictatorial constitution that the likes of Hon. Michuki keep quoting and defending to perpetuate their corruption and impoverishment of Kenyans.
We have no iota of doubt that this government is hell bent in blocking the realization of new democratic constitution. The government has neither a roadmap nor a genuine intention to facilitate the making of new constitution. It is not lost on us that key figures in this government are on record of having said that new constitution can only come to fruition after President Kibaki presidency. However, we are urging Kenyans to become more vigilant and demand that President Kibaki deliver on his promise of facilitating the enactment of new constitution within 100 days.
Signed by the Kenya Human Right Network Members
