SNAKE DISRUPTS COURT PROCEEDING AS MAGISTRATE FLEE THE COURTROOM IN FEAR By Leo Odera Omolo Luocome, Kisumu. There was a big drama in the court located at Kenya Coastal Town of Malindi when a deadly poisonous snake slithered into the courtroom while the courts proceedings were going on. Protocol was momentarily forgotten when every court official scampered for dear life. The acting Principal Magistrate Joshua Kiarie, who was presiding over a theft case, was among those who took to their heels and fled when the snake found its way into Court Number One at about noon. Court attendants, advocates, litigants and police officers guarding the prisoners were not left behind either. In the confusion, some brave officers cocked their guns, thinking there was trouble outside the courtroom!! A senior court clerk, Mr. C. Mororo later told newsmen that the court's normal business was preceding well and smoothly, but all hell broke loose when the snake, a green mamba found its way into the court room. Mr. Alex Mwashanga, who was in the dock to answer theft charges, was the first to notice the presence of the serpent. He shouted "snake, snake" prompting those in the courtroom to dash out. The commotion also disrupted business in the other courtrooms even in adjacent building and offices. The 1.5 metre serpent snake was finally butchered to death by an officer who crushed its head with his heavy police boots. The coastal people usually associate such incidents of snake visiting a courtroom with witchcraft. The Miji Kenda community of the Kenya's Coastal town of Mombasa, the majority of them members of the Muslim Religion, believe in superstitions. Even footballers from the region and even politicians believe in superstitions. Those interviewed believe a witch doctor might have worked over time, using his supernatural powers to send the serpent to court for the purpose of intimidating the trial magistrate, so as to influence him to reach a fair judgment against the accused person. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Machakos District, the parents of school children want a Tanzania witchdoctor, who is a trusted ghost buster, to be invited to cleanse a school that has been closed down over witchcraft claims. The students of Tala High School in Kagundo district were recently sent home following claims that ghosts were molesting them at night. Some parents are pointing the finger at a leading Ukambani political activist. On Monday, a sack full of assorted witchcraft paraphernalia was discovered in students' boxes and the parents are now saying they want the exorcist, Prof. Maji Marefu to cleanse the school. Prof. Marefu has in the past three years exorcised ghosts in schools and homes in Ukamabni. "We want him to come and make the school safe for our children.", a parent was quoted as saying. Prof. Marefu, when contacted for comment said he was willing to do the work. However, the demand by parents is likely to put them into a collision course with the official sponsor of the school, the Roman Catholic Church. The clergy from the nearby Tala Catholic Mission burnt the paraphernalia and destroyed weird drawings and powder recovered from students. Machakos Catholic Bishop Martin Keviera said devil worshiping in schools must be stopped. And while other parents want prayers held before students can be recalled, the Principal, Mr. Samwel Chepkole quickly announced that the Board of Governors would meet to set the reopening date.
