Setting up "Windows 98" Dial-Up Networking
Before starting, it is helpful to first completely read the instructions. It is also recommended that you print a copy, so that you can read them as you do the setup. Make sure to Have your Windows 98 CD ready , as the computer may need to copy files from it. If you have a major brand name computer, the CD files may already be on your hard drive.
STEP 1: Verifying that Dial-Up Networking is installed.
STEP 2: Verifying that Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are installed.
STEP 3: Configuring TCP/IP Protocol.
STEP 4: Setting Up Dial-Up Networking to call Jaluo Dot Com DialUp.
STEP 5: Connecting to Jaluo DialUp.
1. With the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Control Panel' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
2. With the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'Control Panel' icon inside of the 'My Computer' window, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Control Panel' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
3. With the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon inside of the 'Control Panel' window, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Add/Remove Programs' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
4. At the top of the 'Add/Remove Programs' window, you will see three tabs, Install/Uninstall, Windows Setup, and Start Up Disk. With the left mouse button, click on the 'Windows Setup' tab, which is the one in the middle.
5. Under the 'Windows Setup' tab, you will see a list of 'Components'. Select 'Communications' by clicking on it once with the left mouse button. Then click on the 'Details' button to open the 'Communications' window.
6. If the 'Dial-Up Networking' option already has a check in its box, then nothing needs to be changed. Close all windows by either clicking on the 'Cancel' buttons or clicking on the 'X' at the top right of each window.
7. If the 'Dial-Up Networking' option does not have a check in its box, then you need to click on the box to the left of the option. This will put a check in the option box.
8. Click the 'OK' Button to accept the changes. This will also close the 'Communications' window.
9. At the bottom of the 'Add/Remove Programs' window the 'Apply' button should now have turned from gray to black. Click the 'Apply' button and follow the directions your computer asks of you.

2. With the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'Network' icon inside of the 'My Computer' window, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Network' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
3. Find 'The following network components are installed' section, on the 'Configuration' page.
4. If you have both 'Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP' in 'The following network components are installed' section, you need to add nothing. Close all the windows by either clicking on the 'Cancel' buttons or clicking the 'X' at the top right of each window. There may be more compenents in this section, so you might need to scroll through them to find the two that are essential.
5. If you do not have 'Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP' in 'The following network components are installed' section, you need to click on the 'Add' button. This will open the 'Select Network Component Type' window.
6. If you have only 'Dial-Up Adapter' go to Step 8. If you do not have 'Dial-Up Adapter', click on 'Adapter' and then on the 'Add' button. This will open the 'Select Network adapters' window.
7. Click on 'Microsoft', which is on the left under 'Manufacturers'. There are seceral in this section, so you may need to scroll down to find it. After clicking on 'Microsoft', a list of Adapters will apppear on the left. You will need to click on 'Dial-Up Adapter'. Click on the 'OK' button to accept this adapter. You may be shown the 'Select Network Component Type' window again while your computer is working. Do nothing until the 'Configuration' page re-appears. As well as adding 'Dial-Up Adapter', a list of protocols may also appear. If 'TCP/IP' is one, go to step 11. If 'TCP/IP' has not appeared, go to step 8.
8. If you do not have 'TCP/IP' in 'The following network components are installed' section, you need to click on the 'Add' Button. This will open the 'Select Network Component Type' window.
9. Click on 'Protocol' and then on the 'Add' button. This will open the 'Select Network Protocol' window.
10. Click on 'Microsoft', which is on the left under 'Manufacturers'. After clicking on 'Microsoft', a list of 'Network Protocols' will appear on the left. You will need to click on 'TCP/IP'. There are several in this section, so you may beed to scroll down to find it. Click on the button 'OK' to accept this adapter. You may be shown the 'Select Network Component Type' window again while your computer is working. Do nothing until the 'Configuration' page re-appears.
11. Click the 'OK' button at the bottom of the page and follow the directions your computer asks of you.
1. Don't. There is no need. Default is set to server assigned, so Jaluo DialUp handles telling your computer its IP, Gateway, etc...
1. With the left mouse button, click twice on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'My Computer' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
2. With the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'Dial-Up Networking' icon inside of the 'My Computer' window, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Dial-Up Networking' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
3. The 'Make New Connection' window may open automatically. If not, with the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'Make New Connection' icon inside of the 'My Computer' windo, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Make New Connection' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
4. In the 'Type a name for the computer you are dialing' field. Erase "My Connection" and replace it with "Jaluo". In the 'Select a device' field, make sure that what is written is the modem you have. If you are not sure, more often that not what is there is correct. Click the 'Next' Button.
5. In the 'Area code' field, enter the area code of the Jaluo access number you are dialing. In the 'Telephone number' field, enter the number of the Jaluo access number you are dialing. Click the 'Next' button. (By dialing, from a telephone, a number for Jaluo Dot Com I-Net dial-up internet access, you can verify whether or not it is a local number.)
6. Click the 'Finish' button. You have now made a Jaluo icon.
7. If you want a copy of the Jaluo icon on your "Desktop", which you do, with the right mouse button, click once on the 'Jaluo' icon, with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open a drop down window with a 'Create Shortcut' option. Clock on the 'Create Shortcut' option. This will pop up a question window. Click 'Yes'. You now have a handy dandy Jaluo icon on your desktop.
1. With the left mouse button, click twice quickly on the 'Jaluo' icon on your desktop, or in 'Dial-Up Networking', with the tip of the mouse pointer in the center of the picture. This will open the 'Connect To' window. If it does not open, wait a few seconds and try again.
2. Enter your user name (Not your full name, but the one you chose when you signed up with Jaluo) in the 'User Name' field and your password in the 'Password' field. Both the 'User Name' and the 'Password' must have no capital letters. Type them in lower case only.
3. Click 'Connect'. When you connect, the connecting window will drop to your "Task Bar" next to the clock.
4. Open your web-broswer, e-mail client, network game, or whatever you like. Your connection to Jaluo Dot Com I-Net DialUp is now complete.
