Gor Mahia is dying
as we watch
=====================================================I want to bring the plight of our beloved football club to my fellow Jokanam. I am talking about the once mighty Gor mahia FC. The club is on its death bed. If it does indeed get relegated, I think it will be the end. It will follow the same fate as Re-Union. The club is currently suffering because of extremely poor and myopic leadership from none other than Erastas Okul, Elias Otieno and Andrew Juma Sule. They have chosen to challenge the legality of the Kenya Premier league. Their arguments are not based in any principle. The idea that KPL has no mandate to run football in Kenya is a joke because it was mandated by none other than FIFA. Okul and his team have been using all manner of underhanded tactics to dissolve KPL. This is unfortunate because KPL stands a better chance of reviving football in Kenya unlike the KFF which is very corrupt and which sponsors will not touch with a 10 foot pole. Okul and his team have far over-estimated the importance of Gor Mahia; Last year they even refused to let the club play in a playoff to avoid relegation. According to them, "Relegation was beneath the club". Earlier this year Okul threatened to withdraw the club from the league. One is left wondering whether he was going to enroll the team in a foreign league. Okul and his team have told the public that they wish to run the club in a secretive manner and keep fans and members away from the daily affairs of the club. What they dont realize is that this is poor public relations. It alienates fans at a time when the number of fans is already plummetting. It is clear that Okul and his team have a personal agenda they are trying to achieve even if it hurts the club. The biggest losers are the players who worked hard all year long only to see their hard work flashed down the toilet. The fans who have invested their emotions in the club are also being made to suffer. It defies belief that we the fans have chosen to be silent is our club is led towards a cliff by this group of officials. We Jokanam have always prided ourselves in following intelligent, wise , well educated leaders. This has been true since the days of Odera Akango. Why then do we allow our club to be led by a group of officials who are bereft of ideas and who are driven by a selfish agenda ? And where are all the former players ? The only one who has spoken out so far is Tobby Maira. The time has come for all fans, members, former players and current players to stand up and take the club back. None of the current officials were ever elected. It is for this reason that they dont feel accountable to fans. This club needs a group of officials who are accountable to fans. Futhermore, a club election is one way to revive public interest in the club. Before any elections are held, all stakeholders must get together and chart the clubs future. They must decide on what needs to be accomplished within the next 1 or 2 years in order to revive the club. Anyone running for office should then be asked to present a manifesto explaining how he intends to accomplish the clubs long term goals and what he plans to achieve within his term of office. Its high time we had higher expectations of our officials. The time for occupying office and achieving absolutely nothing has passed. Its is the reason football has stagnated in this country. Fans need to be made to understand that hooliganism is detrimental to the team. Its scares fans from attending matches and sponsors generally do not want to be associated with hooliganism. Its now or never. Unless the club members seize the initiative and take the club back, it will sink into oblivion. Lawi Odero "Jaseme" Nairobi Joluo.com Ka in gi mari moro ma di wandik ka to orni
