[kca-info] Stopping Law Enforcers Who Become Sexual Predators August 15, 2006 The OCPD Kasarani Police Station Nairobi Dear OCPD: It is with disgust, disappointment and outcry that I write to you in response to an article in the local media, "Four policemen gang-rape sisters". This incident is a true reflection of how a person in leadership who abuses his/her power can affect the direction Kenya is headed. Especially after the Sexual Offences Bill has just come into force! I represent the STOP! Campaign, an initiative of Kenya Community Abroad (KCA). STOP! aims at confronting child sexual molestation through informing and educating our communities about this crime, and bringing perpetrators to light through the law. It is in this background that I ask you to help bring justice to these teenage girls and to all boys and girls who have fallen victim to child sexual molesters. We react strongly against this because we support zero tolerance for child sexual molesters especially those in positions such as your accused staff members. Moreover, we condemn the mistreatment of the girls by the female police officer who took the position of supporting criminals and had no remorse for the victims. STOP!'s campaign is set up to involve institutions like churches, schools, the Police Department, and organizations in the fight against juvenile predators. We invite you to join our campaign and your efforts to protect citizens so that together, we can combat child molestation and abuse. STOP! demands: An arrest of the four accused police officers; An official reprimand for the female police officer who did not ensure the victims were treated with dignity; Training sessions on compassionate treatment of victims of sexual crime. We urge that the above recommended action be taken very seriously as we will maintain a close follow-up of this case. Please visit www.stopcampaign.com for more information on STOP! We look forward to a response from you. Sincerely, Carolyne Kimiti, cmahiti@yahoo.com Director, KCA-STOP! Campaign, a KCA Initiative Silence, Theft, Oppression, Persecution (STOP!)
