URIRI POLITICS BOILS UP AS CANDIDATES PANICKED OVER ALUDO ENTRY INTO THE RACE Leo Odera Omolo Kisumu 25/11/2006 A LOT OF PANICKING AMONG THE URIRI ASPIRANTS AS THE FORMER THABITI FINANCE CEO PLUNGE INTO THE RACE BY Leo Odera Omolo A lot of panicking has gripped Uriri constituency especially among the more than dozen parliamentary hopefuls when the word started spreading like bush fire that former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the defunct Thabiti Finance Company Limited Mr. Paul Odira Aludo has decided to plunge himself into parliamentary politics in the area. Aludo is a confidant of the KANU vice chairman Dalmas Otieno. Both men worked for many years in Thabiti Finance company before it went burst and was placed under the official receivership .Aludo is now a large scale diary and maize farmer in Trans-Nzoia district. One of the issues likely to complicate the matters for Parliamentary aspirants in Luo-Nyanza is the current amophorous merger between the LDP and KANU under one umbrella of the ODM-Kenya. The merger has resuscitated the old rivalries and antagonism between the LDP and KANU supporters and adherents and what is likely to emerge is that each group would run its own affairs in parallel with the other. According to impeccable sources the LDP luminaries and the sitting MPS have already hatched a secret plan which is aimed at sidelining most KANU supporters who may wish to aspire fore to run for the elections on the ODM-K tickets .This is because the information has emerged that the popularity of the sitting Luo MPs have waned so drastically while the stars of some KANU luminaries in the region are said to be on the rise. In some places the rivalries and enmity between the former protagonists have resurfaced sending out signals of danger and uneasy time ahead of the ODM-K in the Luo Nyanza. In Rongo constituency for example, KANU supporters allied to the party second vice chairman Dalmas Otieno and the LDP members supporting Ochillo Ayacko have already been reported to be on the war path .The two groups are known to be operating in parallel with each other .On various occasions their rivalries has been sending funeral growers scampering for safety when youths supporting the two factions engage each other on physical combat. Similar problems are also expected in the neighbourring Uriri constituency where the former CEO of the defunct Thabiti Finance Company Paul Odira Aludo is expected to throw a tough challenge against the rapidly ageing incumbent Herman Odhiambo Omamba. Both men hails from Katieno one sub-location and members of the populous indignant the Jo-Kanyamkago sub-clan. HERMAN ODHIAMBO OMAMBA This legislator was elected to parliament for the first time during the 1997 on NDP ticket after the creation of this new semi cosmopolitan rural farming constituency in Migori District. He recaptured the seat in the 2002 general election this time around on an LDP ticket .But his representation has made no significant impact in the constituency. Instead he has been thriving on dividing the different ethnic communities and Luo-sub clans living in the area, referring to them as immigrants or Jodak (or Sojourners) discriminatively discriminating them in all aspect of development such as disbursement of CDF, School bursary and CAC funds. Omamba whose age is estimated to be approximately 84 plus is a former primary school teacher who at one time served as the Regional Assembly member for Migori in the defunct Nyanza Regional assembly under the Majimbo constitution .He has initiated not even one single socio- economicr project in the constituency and is credited for bad mouthing those whom he perceived to be his potential opponents. He is also credited for having failed to make his maiden speech in the August ,and rarely ask questions except written one occasionally or contributing via supplementary questions .He has never moved a motion in the house nor seconded any due to his alleged handicapped in both Kiswahili and English languages. Other allegations against him are poor disbursement of CDF, school Bursary and CAC funds. PAUL ODIRA ALUDO A relatively wealthy former CEO of the defunct Thabiti Finance Company, Aludo is one of the few young technocrats from Uriri with the University degrees. He is now a large scale diary and maize farmers in Kitale area in Trans-Nzoia district, but a highly respected personality at home turf in Uriri. Aludo is credited for having contributed immensely towards various economic and socio projects during his time as the CEO of Thabiti Finance and also for having employed a large number of school leavers and local people in his bank. Aludo also hails from the same sub-clan of Jo-Katieno with the incumbent. Their rural homes are also located close to each other. But h is known to be a KANU sympathizer and close a friend of his former boss Dalmas Otieno who is currently the second national vice chairman of KANU.Although he has yet to make his declaration public, the words making the round within the constituency is that he is likely to join the race. His candidature would hurt the ageing Omamba most. LUKE OKEY MADENDE This youthful candidate is another university of Nairobi by product. He studied Land Economics and he is currently a partner in a Quantity and Land Valuer firm in Kisumu.Madende's candidature is appealing mostly to the youths. He is known to have involved himself in numerous Harambee projects and has on many occasions came to the aid of the ailing and sickling constituents. Madende hails from Kamigundho sub-clans, one of the second largest clans after the dominant Jo-Kanyamkago clan. He is a nephew to the former Migori MP the late Nicholas Gor Misiani and is said to be having good rapport with the many constituents. He is a careful planner, but a good mobilizer and a man to watch. Caption: Luke Okeyo Madende OJUWANG` OMOLO He is a wealthy Nairobi based businessman dealing in contracts and sub-contracts for electricity installations and fittings, mainly contracted to major oil firms and other institutions .But he has a very poor academic background having reached only CPE elementary standards of education and thereafter studying for a certificate of electrical mechanics. He is considered as being a mediocre politically, but at the same time the locals are crediting him for being too generous in giving hand outs and hefty donations to schools, woman groups.Omolo is known to have spent a fortunate in sponsoring George Ochola his cousin who beat Omamba hand down in the year 2002 .But this time both men are in the race .They two also hails from the Kamigundho sub-clan, and Omolo`s candidature is expected to hurt the latter and hit him hardest since each will struggle on his own. His fortune is said to be dwindling despite of his monied campaign of handouts. The constituents have vowed not to elect and replace the semi-illiterate Omamba with another man who is considered to be politically a mediocre. GEORGE KIVANGA He is said to be a member of Narc-Kenya and hails from the minority Maragoli clan in Uriri. But the clan which boosts a close to 7,000 registered voters always casts their votes in bloc. Theirs could be a swing votes out of the more than 34,000 registered voters in Uriri. His academic background have yet to be made known, but he is said to be loaded with a lot of money from Narc -Kenya. OKOTH OBADO He is a secondary school teacher with a Master's degree and a former director of Kenya Sugar Board (KSB). He has in the recent past embroiled in war of words with the incumbent Omamba. At time their confrontations at a funeral place had even threatened to turn into a physical combat. Obado had fiercely defended sugarcane farmers in Awendo sugar cane growing zone during his tenure at the KSB. Something which did not endear him well with the two MP's representing constituencies which are close to the Awendo based Sony Sugar Company, namely Ochillo Ayacko (Rongo) ,Odhiambo Obamba (Uriri) resulting in a conspiracy which resulted in being shown the exit doors at the KSB during its zonal elections last year. He is an aggressive young politician who hails from Omamba's same sub-clan of Joka Atieno. But the two don't see each other on eye to eye basis. He is also another man to watch. OWINO OJUANDO He is a Nairobi based lawyer who hails from the Joka Were sub clan of the dominant Joka-Nyamkago clan. But he is of lately reported to be allied to Omamba on the wrong and misconception that he is the ageing legislator would one day anoint him as his successor when he retires. Ojuando is also being accused of displaying excessive arrogance at time like his presumed mentor Omambas is said to be bad mouthing his perceived opponents. In legal profession, he is said to be one of the ambulance chasing lawyers in Nairobi who have yet to print their prominency in legal profession. It is also being alleged that he is a clanist of the worst order, and could provoke interclan warfare if elected to parliament. He is said to have made very little impact in legal profession and preaches clanism politics of the Joka-Kanyamkago supremacy or landlords. GEORGE OKOTH This young artisan who is a manager with a business firm in Nairobi gave Omamba the run for his money in the year 2002 when he beat the incumbent hand down with one single vote during the LDP preliminary .His victory was eventually turned upside down and became short lived after the intervention of the LDP de facto leader Raila Odinga who ordered that the party ticket be issued to Omamba instead of the victor Ocholla . He was promised a free nomination to parliament and after being hounded out of the seat he became irrelevant .It later emerged that he was sponsored by his wealthy cousin a Nairobi businessman Mr.Ojwang Omolo who has since joined the race for Uriri Parliamentary race.Okoth has a lot of support even from his own Jo-Kamigundho sub-clans and will be no match to his "big brother" Omolo. JOHN OBADO A formidable campaigner this young technocrat is a former employee of the Kenya Railways Cooperation where he had rose through ranks and even at one time became the principal of the RTS.He hails from Kajulu sub-clan of the Joka-Kanyamkago. Obado is credited for being a good campaigner who cannot be underrated .His influence goes beyond sub-clans politics and he was seen as the compromising candidate between the indignant Joka-Kanyamkago and the Jodak. (Sojourners) or new immigrants. Whether he will make a big impact this time around is yet to be seen .but he is said to be highly respected for his well calculated speeches. OCHIENG ATORE He hails from the Jo-gem sub clans living around Uriri Market. He is working with some NGOs in Nairobi and is claiming to have supported numerous educational, economic and socio-economic projects within the constituency while using his NGOs. He recently announced that he had won the hearts of the Maragoli community in the area. But investigations on the ground disapproved these claims .It is only recorded that he has given some material assistance to Obuongo Otuagi Primary School located in between Kakiremba, Kamagundho and Jo-Gem sub-clans. And is said to be fond of making big promises of massive financial support to the projects which he never fulfilled. His candidature has yet to impact positively within the constituency.
