Kenya is turning into a police state All people who have fought for the openning of the democratic space in Kenya must condemn the new rules the police are issuing for kenyans as concerns public meetings. The police are there to maintain law and order, not to create laws. This is the kind of impunity which is slowly being visited upon us by these forces that never participated in the struggles that led to the second liberation. These police rules are at best associated with home guards and colonialists. And not the present day Kenya. All Kenyans who fought for the second liberation as a cause they believed in, not as a means to attaining power, must condemn the police and disabuse their newly imagined powers. They have no such powers to police our meetings. Some dead man once said, power corrupts, and absolite power corrupts absolutely. And we are currently witnessing what power does to people who hitherto were comrades in the struggle. What change system could have happenned to Kiraitu, Kibutha Mungwana, Martha Karua? As for President Kibaki, Michuki and Karume, they were never part of us in the struggle. Their loyalty to both systems and the colonialists speak for itself. Mungatan was not born yet in those days, so he does not know what Kenyans talk about when we talk about the struggle. He is a victim of absolute power. As we enter into an election year, Kenyans must jealously guard the hard won freedoms that some of our colleagues watered by their blood. People have been killed by the same police in the struggle. Do we let their deaths go in vain? Some like Ken Matiba are walking proof of what totalitarianism can do to otherwise sane people. We must walk in complete faith as we stroll into the year 2007, the year Kibaki will head to Othaya to do what Kiraitu told Moi to go and do. I refuse to be slowly driven into a police state.
