=====================================================PANIC GRIPS RONGO AS THE HIGH PROFILE US BASED OMONDI AKOTH ENTERS THE RACE By Leo Odera Omolo The entry into Rongo parliamentary contest of the industrious and high profile Omondi Akoth has created a new political dimension in the constituency. The candidature of the US based Mr. Omondi Akoth who hails from South Sakwa Location, Migori district is likely to hurt the position of the incumbent MP George Ochilo Ayako. The legislator will be the hardest hit due to the fact that for the last two consecutive elections, he had the monopoly of votes in South Sakwa, an area whose inhabitants are said to be the most enlightened voters. The majority of them are immigrant communities from Yimbo, Sakwa, Chula Rusinga, Alego, Kogelo, Gem, Luhyias and even a few Kisiis. The area comprises two administrative locations namely, South Sakwa (Alego) and East Sakwa (Waware/Kogelo). Ayako too hails form within Waware sub-location in East Sakwa location, where he belongs to Jo-Kadera sub-clan, which is a minority sub-clan in the area. But within Waware itself, the MP is being stabbed at the back by the recent declaration of Prof. Erick Otieno, the head of physics and science at Maseno University. The high profile Akoth was born 48 years ago in a political house. His father, the late Mzee Barrack Akoth (Rachilo) once represented the entire Sakwa in the County Council of South Nyanza as an elected Councilor. He later ventured into printing business in Homa-Bay town and when the town was upgraded to the Town Council, he became the first mayor. Mr. Omondi Akoth studied public administration and specialized in public finance. He is perhaps one of the most polished aspirants. He is currently the president of Homa Bay Screenprint International, the position he has held ever since the organization’s inception in 1990. Mr. Omondi Akoth lives in Houston, Texas in the United States with his wife Jane Awuor Omondi and their three children. He has been a very resourceful Kenyan in the US. He has extended his heart-full help to many Kenyans in search of green pastures in America and helped many of them secure jobs, houses and other social amenities. At the home front, Mr. Akoth has been consistent in his tireless contribution towards socio-economic growth and by sending his generous donations to nearly almost every economic and social projects being undertaken by the various communities in Rongo. Mr. Akoth’s historical donations included printing machine, which he donated to Ford Kenya prior to 1992 first multi-party general elections. He donated thousands of printed T-shirts to the NDP in 1997 and did the same for NARC during the year 2002 general elections. He is one of the key contacts of the LDP and now ODM-K in the United States. Apart from lending a helping hand to most Kenyans seeking admission to the American Universities, Mr. Akoth’s political activities began in 1990 when he became the chairman of the defunct Ford Kenya and consequently, held the same position in the defunct NDP, LDP and now ODM-K. A graduate of Texas Southern University, Mr. Akoth studied Finance, Banking and Industrial Development Management. Mr. Akoth is a man of substantial means therefore his candidature had already sent shivers down the spines of manly aspirants whose number has since swollen to 12. A very influential person whose eloquence in Dho-Luo, the local vernacular is unbeatable. He is expected to give the incumbent MP George Mbogo Ochilo Ayako a run for his money. The fact that he represented the somehow politically united immigrant sub-clans (Jodak) is giving other candidates sleepless nights. Below is a recent photo of Omondi Akoth
This is a cosmopolitan electoral area, whose inhabitants are people of diverse ethnic and sub-clan background, therefore clanism factor is not likely to be there during the polls and any candidate would be elected on his/her own merit.
