KISUMU 19/01/2007 ANOTHER FUND RAISING FOR RAILA ODINGA'S PERSIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN KITTY TOOK PLACE By Leo Odera Omolo ANOTHER crucial fundraising meeting was held in Nairobi on January 12, 2007 during which substantial sums of money was actually collected. The meeting took place at the same venue where the previous meeting was held, at the Methodist Guest House, Lavington, Nairobi. Mr. Dave Arung, the Personal Assistant of Raila Odinga and the chairman of the Luo Council of elders "Ker" Meshack Riaga Ogalo jointly chaired the meeting. They were assisted by Mr. Ceizar Asiyo and Mr. Karoli Ocholla. The latter two are the joint administrators of ROC. It was organized under the suspices of Raila Odinga Centre (ROC) and the Luo Council of Elders. This time around, the meeting also attracted participants from the Abagusii and Kuria communities from Nyanza Province. In this second meeting, the number of participants had decreased from about 300 hundred who took part in the pervious such gathering to about 180 participants. In attendance were mainly aspiring candidates for the various parliamentary and civic seats in the whole of Nyanza Province, who are also members of the ODM-K. This time around also, there were more LUO MPS in the attendance, among them the Secretary General of the ODM-K Prof. Peter Anyang' Ngong'o, who castigated those who had leaked news of the pervious meeting to the press. He more specifically criticized a Mr. Ted Odero, a prospective candidate in Ndhiwa constituency, who was alleged to have given an interview to the Radio Ramogi FM Station the previous week. Also in attendance were about 50 delegates from Gusii region and about 20 ODM-K supporters and leaders from the Kuria community from Nyanza Province. A substantial amount of money in cash, estimated to be slightly in excess of kshs.3 million was raised on the spot. The meeting, which started later in the afternoon, went on into the late wee hours of the night. Among those who made cash donations were a Mombasa -based business tycoon who is a perennial election looser in Alego-Usonga Constituency, Mr. Edwin Ochieng' Yinda, Dalmas Otieno, another perennial election looser in Rongo, Mr. Jagero -a Kisumu Hotelier, Mr. Charles Odunga Mamba who is an aspirant in Alego-Usonga, Mr. Polycarp Ocholla, a Mombasa based business tycoon who has declared his interest in the Muhoroni seat, Joshua Nyamori (Kisumu Town West), Lawyer John Olago Aluoch (Kisumu Town West), Mrs. Roselyn Okumu (Mathare), Ted Odero (Ndiwa), Mrs. Agnes Awinja Okong'o (Rongo), Mr. Ong'ondo Ng'ani (Rongo) and many other contenders. Others who could not raise cash money made pledges running into hundred of thousands of shillings. There are also numerous complaints raised from certain quarters that Luo people living in diaspora, particularly those living and working in the US and Europe are being conned of their hard earned money under the pretext that the same is being posted back home to beef up the campaign funds for Raila Odinga presidential ambition. Some of the money collected, especially in the US are suspected to have been converted to personal use by the wicked individual conmen involve in the fund raising. When the first fund raising meeting was called last December, it was reported in this forum, but one of Raila Odinga's sycophants disputed the report as having been distorted. The man has since gone silent as the truth began unfolding. Many Luos have said they are tired of contributing towards political harambee instead of development activities. Those who attended Nairobi meeting were sternly warned not to disclose anything to the media. ENDS leooderaomolo@yahoo.com The writer is LUOCOME REPORTER based in Kisumu.
