Abagusii leaders To: mwanyagetinge@ . . . From: "Tom Onduso" tonduso@ . . . To: africa-oped@ . . . Subject: RE: [africa-oped] Re: [Siasa-Kenya] Abagusii leaders Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 09:57:39 +0300 I am Omogusii damu and I have been jolted from my long slumber after the slogging match between Nyachae and Raila. What I need to tell you folks is that the times when every Omogusii worshipped Nyachae or Onyonka (deceased) are long gone. We are now a very independent minded people who intend to chart their own destiny through recognizing what best serves our interests as a people. Nyachae is now a political dinosaur and cannot influence the Omogusii to follow a certain leader as happened in the past. If he still harbours those thoughts, he is deep in slumber. The Omogusii has at last opened his/her eyes and can clearly see the path that will lead her to her destiny in Canaan. Selfish leaders like Nyachae and the ilk no longer server the interests of the Omogusii and this was resoundingly communicated to him at the 2005 referendum. It is high time that Nyachae realized that he is no longer relevant and followed Moi into retirement. He can no longer tether a people like times of yore. The old generations of Kibaki, Karume and other of the old school of thought should now leave the scene. The trend worldwide is to have younger leaders, the likes of Kagame who are able to look at the future objectively and not through the eye-glasses of the independence movements. The future belongs to the younger generation. The oldies have served their time. Nyachae 'Toka'. Kibaki 'Toka'. Mugabe 'Toka'. From: africa-oped@ . . . Led by South Mugirango MP, Omingo Magara, the Orange Democratic Movement Kenya (ODM-K) leaders accused their rivals of being used by Nyachae to settle old scores against Raila in the bid to frustrate his bid for the country's leadership. They said Nyachae and his group in their remarks had exhibited blatant arrogance and at the same time ignited ethnic hatred between the Luo and Kisii communities on the basis of the Lang'ata MP's cultural background. "The MPs exhibited arrogance and in a clear demonstration of hatred and vengeance introduced extraneous matters touching on past elections that the Abagusii and Luo as communities living in Nyanza had nothing to do with and will not now or in the future find relevant in their relationship," the leaders said. Last week, eight MPs led by Kitutu Chache legislator Jimmy Angwenyi hit out at Raila over his recent attack on Nyachae whom he accused of being the stumbling block to the Luo-Kisii unity allegedly for his selfish political ambitions. The group told the Lang'ata MP to forget the Abugusii community's support in his bid for presidency, adding that he was an untrustworthy and unreliable politician. The legislators said the community would support President Mwai Kibaki's re-election bid or back any other candidate like Mwingi North MP Kalonzo Musyoka for the top seat should President Kibaki not contest during the general election expected later in December. Yesterday, Magara and the other ODM-K leaders in a press statement came to Raila's defense saying he had initiated several development projects in the Nyanza region during his short tenure as Roads Minister compared to what Nyachae who is currently holding the Roads docket, and added that Raila deserves the full backing of all the Nyanza people. They reminded Nyachae and his allies that despite his political clout, the entire Abagusii region was fully behind ODM-K. They said Raila had tremendous respect for the Abagusii community and had endorsed him the ODM-K's torch bearer and no amount of abuse or intimidation by the Ford People leaders can make them waver on their stand. "We have now presented our candidate to the rest of Kenyans for support and the few Ford People MPs can only be advised to keep abreast with the changing times," the leaders said. Those who signed the statement included former cabinet minister Chris Obure, former MPs Joseph Kiangoi, Zephaniah Anyieni, former Nakuru KANU branch chairman Geoffrey Asanyo and former Agriculture PS James Ongwae.
