ANOTHER HIGH PROFILE WOMAN ASPIRANT JOINS THE RACE FOR BURET PARLIAMENTARY
SEAT
By Kipsiele Arap Sugurut Mrs. Rachel Chebet Yegon, 50 year mother offour grown upchildren is the latest sensational entry into the already crowded fieldin therace for Buret Parliamentary seat in Bureti District. The announcement brings the number of womenaspirants tothree. The other ladies are Mrs. RachelNg’eno, the wife of the former MP for the area and long serving cabinetMinister,the late Prof. Jonathan Ng’eno and Mrs. Edna Bore, the wife of theformerNyanza Provincial Commissioner, the late Mr. Amos Bore. Mrs. Yegon who isinvolved in many socialactivities and community services in Keinoand Bureti District is the wife of Mr. Reuben Yegon,who is the corporate director of Kericho based Brooke Bong / Unilever Tea Ltd. She is a resident of Kelunet Village inKabugar Location inRoret Division in lower Bureti.Mrs. Rachel Chebet YegonShe was educated at Roret Primary School,Kipsigis Girls SecondarySchool for her ‘O’ level and later at the Alliance Girls High School,Kikuyufor her ‘A’ level studies. She served with the government as animmigration officer andlater as the Registrar of person at a district level before quittingthe civilservice and joining business and social work for the community. She has since been running the Total ServiceStation inKericho town as a family business concern, and also as the generalmanager ofthe Kelunet Mineral Waters which is also part of the family business. She is a board member and vice chairpersonof the KerichoDistrict Hospital. She is also theretired vice chairperson to the board of Kericho Water and SanitationCompanyLimited (KEWASCO) and a board member of the Tengecha Girls SecondarySchool, aformer member and vice chairperson of the Litein Children Home. And also a board member of Roret MixedSecondary School. Mrs. Yegon is the BOG chairpeson of theKorongoi SecondarySchool and the chair peson of the Tigei Women Group in Buret and as astaunchChristian she is the treasurer of the Kericho based African InlandChurch WomenCouncil. Her candidature is likely to complicate thesituation for a numberof male contestants, especially those who have emerged from thedarkness andoutside the constituency and those who have been sleeping and enjoyingtheirfat monies without helping the community in development activities. Already, it has sensitized and provokedgender activities inBuret where women have vowed to elect their fellow women in place ofmenchauvinists.
