Among the key suggestions are the delegates system, and the consensus. The last official meeting emerged with a resolution on the 2000-delegates-per-constituency system. However, it is not yet clear to some of us the method of nominating these delegates at the constituency level. But we are aware that deliberations to fine tune whatever method are still on course. Consensus, if I understand it well, is the system where the party's officials, or presidential aspirants, will sit down and consult among themselves, and agree on which candidate to present as a party. Now here is where my problem with this system lies. Are Ruto, Raila, Kalonzo, Mudavadi, Balala, Ojiambo, Okemo, Uhuru, and the little known Nazlin Omar, the bonafide offiicials of ODMK? In what capacities? Is it fair that they can sit down and divide posts of leadership, including the presidency, among themselves? Who do they represent? Their constituencies? What happens to other constituencies whose representatives are not ODMK luminaries? Is this not imposition? What makes them think that the next president of this country must just come from among them? My submission here is that Consensus may be convenient, but it is utterly undemocratic. We need these people, and any other person who wants to come up, to be subjected to a democratic process, be it by delegates or any other alternative. This will also guard against providing losers with a justification for defection, as they will have lost democratically. The other day some of the so called ODM luminaries were suggesting consensus up to constituency level, which is tantamount to handpicking candidates to run for MP at the constituency level. We in Nyanza have told Raila to not even dream of that this time, or we shall humiliate him.
