TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ... Newark-based IDT Corp., a major seller of telephone calling cards, said Thursday it has settled a class action lawsuit and will give customers who bought prepaid and rechargeable cards refunds totaling up to $20 million.

The settlement, which still must be approved by the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, resolves claims regarding disclosures of rates and charges for cards bought from Jan. 1, 1997 through Dec. 16, 2007.

IDT denied any wrongdoing or liability, but under the settlement it must modify the disclosures on its calling cards, propose a uniform calling card regulation to the state attorney general's office and make a $2 million donation to charity.

Under the settlement, calling card purchasers must supply the PIN number from an IDT calling card to receive a refund. Customers can receive 50 cents toward domestic calls for each card. For rechargeable cards, customers can receive 50 cents if they put an initial $5 worth of calling time on the card.

Purchasers can submit claims by calling 1-800-921-2781, any calling card access number or through the IDT Web site.

The settlement involves IDT Corp., its IDT Telecom subsidiary, which provides retail and wholesale telephone service, and Union Telecard Alliance, its calling card distribution affiliate.

IDT shares fell 25 cents, or 1.9 percent, to $12.12.85 in trading Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.
