Nyanza and NEP lead in poverty levels

By Standard reporter

Kenya’s development strategies have not embraced human security.

A UN report, Kenya National Human Development Report, released on Tuesday says Nyanza Province is the poorest with a poverty incidence of between 65 and 80 per cent.

It is closely followed by North Eastern Province, which has an incidence of 64 per cent followed by Western Province with an incidence of 61 per cent. Eastern and Coast recorded an incidence of 58 and 57 per cent.

The richest is Central Province with a poverty incidence of 44 per cent and Rift Valley with 48 per cent. "Nineteen of the richest 23 districts, with a poverty incidence of less than 35 per cent are in Central Province," the report adds.

The report with the theme, Human Security and Human Development further indicates that households headed by individuals with secondary level of education or above are less poor. And in each constituency, according to the report, households headed by individuals with no school education have the highest poverty incidences.

"This pattern holds true for both urban and rural areas across the 210 constituencies," says the report.

It says urban poverty is as multi-dimensional as rural poverty, with common features such as unemployment inadequate housing, lack of social protection, healthcare, education and security.
