[Jambo] Nyachae Retiring

Elijah,

You state that Nyachae was the first Kisii to run for the presidency. That is factually wrong. The late George Moseti Anyona ran for president on a KSC ticket in 1992. Of note is the fact that whereas Anyona won the Bogetutu Masaba parliamentary seat, he did not win the presidential votes in any constituency. In fact, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga carried the day at the presidential level in Bogetutu Masaba. In 1992 and 1997, the Abagusii showed that they do not vote purely on ethnic lines.

Maybe what you meant to say is that Nyachae was the first Kisii to mount a serious run for the presidency. I for one thought that in 2002, Nyachae for president was a better candidate than either Kibaki or Uhuru Kenyatta who he ran against. Unfortunately, it seems that once Nyachae lost that race, he lost his focus too. He instead became a prop for what has become known as the GNU under Kibaki. If you read the story on Nyachae's possible retirement as reported in the Standard, it would seem that Kibaki supporters and Nyachae coat-hangerons like Hon. Masanya are the ones who are most scared about the effect that Nyachae's retirement will have on them.

All the adjectives that you use to describe Nyachae are ones that have been used before. Even Nyachae himself has not attempted to refute them. They all describe the a perception of Nyachae's behavior and personality. But, as the man retires, and I hope he will, there is one adjective that will not haunt him in his retirement. The adjective is CORRUPT. The man may be arrogant, even mediocre, and all the behavior and personality adjectives you use about him may apply, but he has never been linked to sleezy deals like Goldenberg or Anglo-Leasing. If there are any silver linings in Nyachae's impeding retirement from active politics, then eschewing corruption despite a long career in the civil service and politics must rank as one of them. If anything, that is a good thing. On that level, he gets high marks. Even those, like yourself, who act as thorns in his flesh, must commend and emulate him for that.

Thanks.

Michoma
