When the United States Classified Kenya as a failed State, Kenyans were at a loss. Many were quick to raise their objections. Citing what they termed as Kenya's achievements.
For many years, Kenya had taken much delight at the strife that had faced and bedeviled Uganda. After all it was a war torn Nation, led by maniacs, - Idi Amin was hated and was called every name in the books. He was a cannibal, ( so they said ) Ethiopia was forever at war with neighbours; Somalia, and the war of Liberation was raging at the Northern frontiers, with the Eritreans. There was also the Oromo struggles. Then the Ogaden war of 1977 with Somalia.
In 1989 the Expulsion of the Rwandese Tutsi tribe saw most of them flocking to Kenya. Tanzania was a Communist pariah and Kenya was the darling of the greedy Western Capitalists! Life could not have been sweeter for Kenyan officials. They flocked into Kenya with bags of Dollars to take care of the displaced people headed to placid Kenya!
With all the activities mesmerizing the Kenyan officials, they thought that Kenya was on the right tract. The docile Kenyan Population was left languishing in abject poverty and hopelessness. Horrific-shameful slums of; Kibera, Kawangware, Mathare Valley, and Korogocho, became the norm for the Kenyans who were flocking into the cities of Kenya.
As the international community came to bribe the Kenyan government to be a faithful capitalist State, Kenya opened her gates for any one who wanted to come in. Many of these people were the Asians - mostly from Bahrat, ( India ). They were truly good at what they wanted. They bled Kenya to death while the Kenyan officials watched and even aiding them! Mr. Moi had even one personal Indian banker! The saddest part is that the so called experts were actually leeches. Fleecing Kenyans. As they lived in palaces, Kenyans were left in slums. No one group of individuals had done significant harm to Kenya than the Indians. For every scandal, an Indian has always been behind it. Goldenberg was Indian.
Kenya went ahead and opened Camps for refugees and displaced people, and those people lived better than the Kenyan citizens! Many Kenyans became refugees so that they could get better services and live better and out of the slums!
Kenya was praised as the stability of the confused and lunatic area of Africa. Kenya was asked to negotiate for the peace between the warring groups. For nearly a decade-during the 1980s Kenya immersed in a futile search for the reconciliation between Museveni and Various successive governments of Uganda. Kenya spent a great deal of money sending Kenyan Military to various countries for peace keeping missions. Kenyan leaders were drunk with praise and the Docile Kenyan masses, provided a ticked audience. They wallowed in horror of created poverty, without an objection!
In an article written on the Canadian Newspaper-The National Post, January 10, 2006, by David Asper, He would call it an overwhelming sea of poverty. One of the stark reminder of docility that Kenyans are famous for was a remark, " One can only wonder why they do not rise up and revolt! " The Kenyans have been treated like dirt until they believe that they are dirt and should live like that in great poverty!.
There is nothing wrong to help foster peace, it is a noble act, but first, you ought to make sure that your own house is at peace, then you can go over to " Majirani " Kenya itself was breaking apart while the government was away, bringing peace to war torn, far away places on Earth. How can these be acceptable?
As the government of Kenya went about catering for their masters, and singing the tunes that were irrelevant, the country was falling apart. The security for the citizens disappeared. Internal strife took over. There were no state machinery to guarantee the security. Parties of marauding savages in Pokot and Karamojong of Uganda, and the Toposa from the Sudan and Ethiopia mounted frequent raids into Kenyan territory. As usual no action is taken by the government. Politicians pay a lip service, and every one agrees that something must be done-and of course, nothing is ever done. One of the illiterate, foolish Pokot legislator said his people were, " having fun! " ( Killing People ) for their cattle rustling behaviour. The government kept silent.
Then there were the; 1983 Clashes between the Nandi and the Luyia in Kapkangani, then came the 1992, and then the 1997, the 1999 and the current 2006-2007 clashes in Mt. Elgon. The Molo-Kuresoi wars,Laikipia, Nakuru, Marsabit, Trans-Mara and we can practically say every part of Kenya is in turmoil. The country is at war with itself.
The nation is run aground, by the leaders, most of whom are the cause of the problems. There is a lame President, His wife like a lunatic. Foreign mercenaries come in and out trotting over Kenyans, and leaving chaos in their way. Marauding murderers are wiping villages and the political elites are throwing incendiary words left and right. There is an idle army and the security officials watching the nation fall apart. And they are inept to do anything.
Frequently there are incursions into Kenyan territory by the Ethiopian armed forces and the Oromo liberation fighters, there are the Pirates and the Somali gunmen wrecking havoc on the Somali - Kenya frontier. And no matter how loud cries for help from Kenyans, It can never wake the President to do something!
The minister responsible for defense and security has no clue on what to do! The M.P.s are too occupied with looting the treasury. In practical terms, Kenya has no functional government!
It was on this facts that the U.S. Government stated that Kenya is a failed state! When a nation operates in the manner in which Kenya does her business it does portray the characteristics of a failed state! No nation on Earth can allow what has been left as a norm in Kenya, to take place. People like the Arturs Brothers would have been shot immediately! And a political activist of the ruling party would not dare even to be associated with that type of characters, let alone to marry and defend them! Never!.
Why has the president failed to act in the matters of security?, Kenyans are killed and you have never heard the president make a statement or send a heavily armed military force to quell the marauding killers, terrorizing the civilians. The president is being begged but nothing, not even an emergency situation, can rouse him to act! What can you call these type of men?. And most of all, the state has failed miserably in her duties to safeguard the citizens of Kenya.
Kenya therefore, in this context is a sure failed state!.
