Kenya and the new constituecies

From: Haggaio@ . . .

The argument used by EC or past government has always been the same as the ones being presented now, that is:
1. The population of a given constituency (being large)
2. The area covered by a given constituency being large)

It has always been believed that subdivision of administrative regions/ contituencies will always bring services closer to people. As much as this may sound noble, the public that are to be served by these changes have never seen anything tangible over the years that the constituencies have been subdivided.

While the number of MPs have risen over the years nothing new in terms of infrastructure (hospitals, schools, roads) have been built in those new constituencies that were supposed to bring services closer to people. Districts and constituencies that were divided years back are still sharing the same infrastuctures that were there before the new boundaries were created yet such services were to be more accessible due to the new boundaries.

It is therefore my belief that the creation of new contituencies should not be the priority at this point in time. The government and all the electeted members of should prioritise the provision basic human needs eg affordable health care brought closer to people, improved education, eradication of poverty, fighting corruption, improved security to Kenyans and Visitors alike.

The government and the MPs seem to luck strategic thinking. The money that will be wasted on pay and other allowances to the new Mps should be used to deliver services to the poor majority of Kenya. Why increase the number of constituencies and fail to deliver on the very reason why such increase was made or is it just away of increasing the bargining power of the incumbent.

Take Nairobi or Kisumu as an example, apart from increased private hospitals, schools and houses what is it that one can pin point that, this has been made available because of an increase in the number of constituencies or as a strategic government planning.

What do you think my fellow Kenyans?
