Can Kenya become Cohesive and erase tribal profiling? I read with a lot of dismay individual sentiments regarding candidate preferences ie. who is fit to be the next president of Kenya after Kibaki. What I do not read include why and how. Fact Kenya is multi tribal Fact Kenya has different cultures Fact Kenya has had corrupt leadership in the past and current Fact Kenya is an emerging democracy Fact any member of the Kenyan tribe can make a good ruler Fact cultural values should play very minor role in the governance of our republic Fact Economy can do better that it is doing already Fact Kibaki has been successful to an extent Fact Kibaki was a good VP and finance Minister but was dropped by Moi due to the latter's insecurity of being succeeded by Kibaki Fact Raila has been a consistent fighter for the expansion of democratic space more than the other current presidential contenders. Fact Kibaki is getting older and may not be the best choice for a President after this year. Fact Moody Awori is not likely to run for office because of age and other factors Fact Kalonzo, Mudavadi, Ruto became active proponents for change after Raila's influence Fact Julia Ojiambo, has not expressed her vision for kenya Fact Uhuru kenyatta is not sure of his strategy and is looking for a springboard to jumpstart his political career Fact Najib Balala is a good manager Fact Joe Nyagah is a democrat Fact there is political leadership vacuum in Kenya Fact majority of kenyans are living in abject poverty Fact majority of Kenyans do not have a source of revenue Fact the rich and poor gap is widening in Kenya by the day So what should we do as Kenyans to ensure that we put in office a person of integrity and character who can steer our country to more cohesion and positive governance? 1. We must avoid tribal profiling 2. We must talk to each other, just in the same way we did when we fought the British colonialists 3. We have to remain an open minded society 4. We have to recognize each and every Kenyan's potentials 5. We have to avoid writing trivially explosive sentiments on our electronic and print media 6. We have to refocus our strategy on the interest of Kenya as a Nation and not tribal vision 7. We have to build a common vision for the Nation 8. We have to eradicate double speakers from the platform of populism 9. Those of us who leave in more democratic societies, we ought to study the way democracy is played correctly 10. We ought to criticize responsibly, not just for the sake of expressing critique 11. We have to think a head, what society do we envision beyond Kibaki or whoever becomes the next President? 12. When voting, use your responsible reasoning not tribal bias to make the right choice! 13. Those who live outside of Kenya and may not go back home to vote should stop being too loud about politics dispensation in Kenya. Julius Okelo Joluo.com Akelo nyar Kager, jaluo@jaluo.com |
