Dholuo face Extinction!! A friend recently told me that our Dholuo Language faces a serious threat. That, Dholuo is dying because it is not passed on by parents to their children. The current Luo parents use either a corrupted version of English and Swahili (Sheng) with their children or English altogether at the expense of Dholuo. Let us debate this matter. Language is one of the wonders of nature. I am thinking of writing short story books about Luo greats to reverse this trend; Simbi Nyaima, Luanda Magere, Gor Mahia, Baba M. Melkio etc etc. to be used in Diaspora and in Urban centres of Luoland. Language is the most efficient means of transmitting a culture, and it is the owners of that culture that lose the most when a language dies. Every culture has adapted to unique circumstances, and the language expresses those circumstances. While a community may not lose its sense of identity when it loses its language, identity is closely associated with language. In informal settings, many of us use; Otoyo, Ondiek Ma Rach, Rateng',Thiringinyi(aparo ka Ochieng Kabaselleh) Nyadendi, Atoti etc. to cheer each other up, improve self esteem etc. I doubt if your 1 year old son will do that when he reaches 30years.
