MR UHURU KENYATTA STAND UP AND BE COUNTED The Kenyan political temperature is now rapidly changing and getting hotter. The hotter it gets, the more people it leaves by the wayside. All the political parties, both small and large, are realigning their positions and alliances are being formed. We know all the presidential contenders but one of them seems to have lost even before the game starts. Mr Uhuru Kenyatta, KANU chairman and leader of the Opposition party has been missing in the large debate and does not appear on the political radar. People keep on asking will he or won't he stand for presidency. This should be a given as he is the chairman of KANU and the party is no longer part of the larger ODM-K family. Mr Uhuru Kenyatta made it known that KANU must remain independent of ODM-K and has since made it clear that they will field both parliamentary and civic candidates in all constituencies in the December elections. Could it be that he just did not want to be part of the larger ODM team and had more powerful forces watching every move he makes, that made him indecisive for that long? To me it seems more probable that his reasons for jumping ship at the eleventh hour were more insidious and suspect. If they were not then he would be very busy campaigning for KANU members to nominate him as a presidential candidate. But NO. He is not interested in a fight this time round. If he wins Gatundu South in December, Mr Kenyatta will be more than happy. But why if KANU is truly independent and does not want to build political alliances with others as he had made others believe? Or is it just ODM-K which is not working for him but DP or NAK-K are okay? Mr Kenyatta has clearly calculated his chances and concluded that he better work hard to bag the parliamentary seat and leave the big prize for Mzee wa Othaya. Even in polygamous families, it has never been wise for two brothers even if they are from different matriarchs to fight for one golden prize. The family elders may not be amused to witness such a protracted tussle between brothers for the prize will still belong to the family irrespective of who wins it. Also at present it works well for the elder brother (Mzee) has the head and other juicy bits of the kill for he is the one who squeezed the last breath out of the animal, while the younger brother (Uhuru) with his eyes locked on the kill just missed by a whisker, but all the same, he also brought home a piece of the kill for mama wa nyumba to share with her elders and co-wives. So all is perfect, why spoil? With this school of thought it then becomes evidently clear why Mr Uhuru Kenyatta is marooned in an island of indecisiveness and confusion because he can't be seen to be fighting Mzee. This strategy may steadfastly diminish his future political utility which in the end might kill his political ambitions altogether. He must gather courage to abandon the grey haired pensioners who hold his political thinking at ransom and start working with the forces that stand for positive change, rule of law, good governance and positive leadership, attributes for a good government that Kenyans have yearned for, for many years. Mr Uhuru Kenyatta stand up and be counted if you want to lead this great country in future. It is time you show your leadership skills.
