Kisumu 09/08/07 PROF. RATEMO MICHIEKA JOINS THE RACE FOR NYARIBARI MASABA SEAT IN KISII . By Leo Odera Omolo A prominent academician Prof Ratemo Michieka has declared his interest in the Nyaribari Masaba parliamentary seat in Central Kisii district. Prof. Michieka who is a well known personality in the academic world and the country intellectual curtails is one of few Kenyans who are armed with the most illustrious academic backgrounds. For many years he has served as the Vice Chancellor of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and until very recently was the Chief Executive of the National Environmental Management Organisation,(NEMA) a government parastatal charged with the responsibility of protecting the country environment against degradation. Prof. Michieka will battle it with the incumbent MP Dr. Hezron Manduku, and the immediate former MP for the area Prof. Sam Ongeri. The seat usually attracts many aspirants at times forcing the electorate to cast their votes on clanism (Obonyumba) pattern but the entry into the race by such academic giant and internationally renown governmentalist like Prof. Ratemo could easily neutralize the electorate to go for the best brain. Prof. Michieka who is currently visiting the US was quoted in the website as saying 'my vision is to be heading a constituency in Kenya under a visionary and unbiased leadership with unparallel integrity and success. ''My mission is to share our resources fairly, equitably and uniformly so as to deliver quality education, Agriculture, Transportation and to liberate our people especially the youth and women from the object poverty bondage and unemployment. Quality and timely achievement of tasks will be my driving force''. This coming Sunday Kenyan living in the US will have a golden opportunity of meeting with Prof. Michieka for prayers and fund raising for his campaign kitty at Bethel SDA Church, 276 Stegman street. The Prof. is one of the political heavy weights in Gusii region's politics. He is still being remembered as a credible leader when for many years he chaired the University Loan Scheme, which helped many students from poor family, acquired their University education with a lot of easiness. He is level minded academic giant who is easy going and friendly. Ratemo is highly respected by Kenyans from all the communities.
