MP KAJWANG’ IS INDUBITABLY A CONTESTANT TO RECKON WITH
By Nyakiya M.O
As we approach this year’s general election, the sea of political speculations
still remain wide. The major speculation based on whether the incumbent legislators
will clinch or not. For the case of Mbita constituency currently held by
Hon. Kajwang’, it takes a political analyst another rung in wits to suffice
a judgment on the expectations. The imminent
contest is overtly commensurate to analogy of the battle between experience
and inexperience. Either one side is experienced and better placed this year
to represent Mbita constituency than the other- the natives say the guess
is obvious.
In the recent visit of Rusinga east and other parts of Rusinga by Hon. Kajwang’
within the above constituency- the area of his opponent-with the gist of
assessing the development projects initiated by the CDF and various fund
drives spearheaded by him, it was evident that political issues were at play.
The type of reception the residents accorded him and his team ignited a
premonition of his definite vanquish late this year. The legislator is allegedly
among the MPs whose constituencies got credits for good management of funds.
He is also purported to have touched key areas of development pertinent to
the area namely schools, dispensaries, dams and water supply, bursaries among
others.
At one point near Kamgere village, he received a warm welcome by the members
of the community led by the ‘Tama group’
who pledged their solemn support for the MP and further led by one of them
highlighted the reason for their support. He had several visits of beaches
and schools. The legislator according to the
natives is full of tactics both in politics and development that his opponents
lack. When he stands he is actually the cynosure and in the presence of
his opponents – allegedly inept at making speeches- he scores. They say the
current tactics of ‘tick’ and football matches where the
former involves constituents applauding in a rejoinder after a mention of
every achievement and the latter brings out the idea of a team sponsor who
can always provide the team with everything apt for their victory but when
it comes to the actual play and trophy presentation he would still be aloof
and that for a political penalty shoot out, it would be impossible to select
a spectator for the same- not on your nelly- lest the team be disowned, puts
him another and yet another step ahead of other contestants whose understanding
of the above is in consonance with the legislator.
Elsewhere while addressing mourners at Ndiege’s home in Kamasengere and later
at Ratego’s home, Rev. Matunga, a Suba elite who accompanied the MP reiterated
that somebody did not need to be a politician to be pronounced development
conscious. Other elite by the name Dan Odhiambo- a brother to Milly of CRADLE-
also aroused the political mood when he unravelled the requisites of a political
leader by first of all mentioning that it was binding that one had to wash
his hands socio-politically before an invitation for a political dish and
secondly by a parable of hunting dog and later the one of the crocodile,
hippopotamus and a lake Victoria mammal that resembles a weasel.
These posed to the electorates that some contestants who had
hastily covered many laps in an enervating race were to begin the race having
raced without passing through the socio-political checkpoints.
The most contemptible and escalating act that was initiated by some camps
in the constituency branded locally as ‘gonyo’
which means releasing one from economical bondage, has
gone deep into the minds of the constituents to the extend of infants and
old women demanding for ‘gonyo’ which was initially meant for the youth.
This has not succeeded since some say they simply get the cash then finally
behave like the domesticated poultry that would not miss their owners’ shelter
at the end of the day. The caution is that, these people, with the virtue
of being voters are likely to make the funds of the said contestants to diminish
then at the end of the day fail to vote for them.
The answer to the question of whether he would retain his seat or not is
certainly yes. The reasons being that he has all cliques of people by his
side: the education elites, the youth and elderly people of which every member
of this composition is charged with a specific onus towards achieving victory.
Furthermore, the incumbent councillors, nominated and aspirants for civic
seats most of them if not all have been seen more often than once pledging
their support for the MP. The university students from the constituency that
claim to be of sound and clear conscience have also been at the ground influencing
people of their areas of residence that when the voting time reaches they
should make wise decision- remember they also command respect from their
people. The Wanyama people also from Rusinga Island have also reportedly
said they would back the incumbent with the conviction that he helped them
raise Ksh 2.2 millions – a record that had
not been achieved-that was meant to help raise a polytechnic in their village
among other notably development projects.
To be succinct, Hon. Kajwang’ who is associated nationally with
‘mapambano’ and known locally as ‘owadga Akoth wuoyi ma slope’
as Yuka would put it, is still smart for his opponents. As it would be hard
to convince the local voters with the strong conviction that their MP deserves
reward for his selfless and meritorious efforts towards their liberation.
The risible propaganda about to be peddled by his opponents about his failures
have been cavilled by some of the sensible constituents that instead feel
that it is the Government that has failed in constructing them good roads.
These same people feel that on their assessment, their MP has served them
assiduously within his domain with the only nadir of his success being during
LDP grass root elections which they claim wasn’t the real political replica.
