PRESS RELEASE : KCA appeals for peaceful campaigns.
The stoning on Friday in Kisii of two opposition MPs and a parliamentary
aspirant on a campaign mission by rowdy youth rekindle security fears as the
country enters its penultimate stage to the general elections.
The Kenyan Community Abroad (KCA) wishes to appeal to all peace loving Kenyans,
politicians and especially the youth to conduct peaceful, issue oriented campaigns
devoid of personality attacks, name calling and stone throwing. We appeal
especially to the youth to refuse to be used as erectors of tents in political
rallies and pawns in the individual interests of the politicians. Equally
importantly, we urge political leaders to use their sense of judgment to
avoid situations that will provoke violence.
What we would like to hear from the political class are sound ideas of how
they would improve the economy, tackle insecurity, ensure affordable health
care, quality education and the improvement of the general living standards
of the people of this great nation. Such campaigns must show respect to the
rule of law, the institutions and the person of the President.
We fear that pre election violence, in a country already wilting under the
burdens of tribal animosities, will brutally overshadow the democratic gains
the country has so painstakingly nurtured over the years. Which is why, we
agree with the lead editorial in Saturday`s edition of
The Nation
that police must apprehend and bring to book the people
behind the ugly incident at Kisii`s Nyamarambe shopping centre. Any PR gag
would not do our nascent political process any good.
Long live
