Is Mzee Kibaki the KANU Candidate? Nyar Kager, I am a social pundit, turned into political pundit by the events in Kenya today. I thought that the next Presidential contest would be between ODM (Hon Odinga) and Mzee Kibaki in "Kibaki-Friendly-Parties" Party (KFP-P). But with the defection of Ohuru Kenyatta with elements of the Independence Party (read KANU) to KFP-P, with the condition that KANU fields its own parliamentary candidates, the political arithmetic also changes. I want to predict that Mzee Kibaki will run on a KANU ticket with "Some Moi" as running mate. Why Mzee Kibaki must run on a KANU ticket is that, of all his possible choices, only KANU has a real national image (We all know that Mzee Kibaki cannot run as an ODM candidate). This race will be between ODM (Hon. Odinga) and KANU (Mzee Kibaki = Moi). What happens in the KFP-P camp when Parliament dissolves will be a choatic reallignment. Kenyans, we are about to witness a falling off of politicians, and political reallignments independent Kenya has never witnessed. Why the fallout in KFP-P? With Hon. Kenyatta's defection, such elements in KFP-P as Ford-P and Ford-K are waking up to the realization they are being used to feed a long-term political Dynasty in the making. Kenyans, you are reading Mzee Moi's political playbook. In this playbook (unpublished) a Leader of the Opposition (Hon Kenyatta) can defect without any sense of shame, and a sitting President can defect right back to his KANU roots as long as his objective is achieved (Politics is about perception, and the perception is that Mzee Kibaki would have gone back to the Independence Party). ODM must be mobile with eyes and ears wide open. But in Moi's world, what you see could be a decoy! Watch these spaces. Joseph R.
