UGANDA IN COMMUNICATION PREPARATION FOR CHOGM SUMMIT. By Leo Odera Omolo As part of the preparation for the forthcoming commonwealth Head of State and Government summit the foreign Affairs Ministry in Kampala has received a wireless Local Area Network (LAN) and internet with a capacity of 2 MB per second. "The deployment of this LAN and Internet access to secretariat will enable the Ministry have fast internet speeds and instant access points anywhere in the building so that visiting dignitaries can connect easily," says Mr. Hans Paulson Uganda's chief communications officer. The service is provided by Uganda telecom. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is designated command and control centre for the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) summit. Previously the Ministry only had about 128 KB, which is inefficient for such an institution. The new technology was installed at a cost of Ush 140 million. The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs James Mugume said CHOGM had helped the country acquire infrastructure by pushing service providers to move faster. "This is going to bring in more conferences that will use these services" said the PS. Ends. leooderaomolo@yahoo.com Joluo.com Akelo nyar Kager, jaluo@jaluo.com |
