=====================================================Respect the National Anthem, parties told Published on October 13, 2007, 12:00 am By Cyrus Ombati and Martin Mutua Political parties have been warned against misusing the National Anthem during public rallies. In a meeting between the Police Commissioner, Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) and party representatives, Maj- Gen Hussein Ali warned that parties risked having their meetings cancelled if they flouted the directive. The parties were also asked not to refer to any individual in the meetings as "His Excellency" as that is reserved for an elected President. The meeting was held at police headquarters, Vigilance House, Nairobi. ODM and Kanu played the National Anthem at their recent meetings in Nairobi and at some point mentioned the words "His Excellency" while referring to certain individuals. Ali reminded the parties of the rule that requires them to notify the police of an intention to hold a rally 72 hours prior to the event. ECK reminded the parties to ensure they sign the electoral code of conduct that binds them to hold peaceful campaigns. Some party representatives at the meeting requested for more security for their candidates. They were informed that more security could only be seconded to the parties after the ECK clears the candidates and police have determined the need. Joluo.com Akelo nyar Kager, jaluo@jaluo.com |
