WORLD FOOD DAY: 'HUNGER IS EXLUSION'. A country where the right to food is achieved for everyone is one where people at every level are active participants in society, have input to government policies and can demand action from their leaders and government is held accountable. It is also a nation where resources are distributed and used more equitably and to sustain them. As we prepare to observe ‘World Food Day’ we should remember what Josue de Castro (1908-1973)2, the famous Brazilian doctor and anti-hunger advocate wrote. In his book ‘Hunger is Exclusion’, he states that, ‘Exclusion from the land, from jobs, wages, income, life and citizenship. When a person gets to the point of not having anything to eat it is because all the rest has been denied. This is a modern form of excile. It is death in life’. Most valnerable people include the landless farmers, squatters, urban dwellers, people living in conflict zones like Mt. Elgon, those infected with and affected by HID/AIDS, children and the extremely poor. Regards, Mundia Mundia Jnr . Joluo.com Akelo nyar Kager, jaluo@jaluo.com |
