NYATIKE NOMINATION A SHAM - PROTEST LETTER From: Elias .O. Ratten'g Dear Janet Attached letter was fowarded to the NEB, through Mr. Ahmed, copied here. --- ELIAS ODHIAMBO RATTEN'G, (ASPIARNT-NYATIKE CONSTITUENCY) P.O BOX 38, MACALDER, VIA MIGORI __TEL: 0721 794521__
19 th November, 2007 The Chairman, National Elections Board (O.D.M PARTY) Orange House, Nairobi
Kind Att: Justice Richard Otieno Kwach.
PROTEST NOTE OVER NYATIKE CONSTITUENCY ODM NOMINATIONS ON 17TH NOVEMBER 2007.
I wish to convey, through this letter, the overall dissatisfaction of the people of Nyatike Constituency with the manner in which the Orange Democratic Movement Party of Kenya settled on it candidate. Am personally dehumanized when the party can subject the aspirants and the constituents to grueling campaigns only to use unknown formulae to settle on a candidate. It is even sad when the selected candidate was considered least popular with the people.
Why would the party shunt all the set rules and consider unfriendly means of getting candidates? Why were we asked to comply with rules that were never to be used? Why were we conditioned to pay so dearly for something that was never to be?
In Nyatike Constituency, there were massive shortage of voting materials and we accepted to go on with what was available. Just when the materials were being distributed to the polling stations, one of the aspirants was already with the returning officer, declaring himself winner over a local vernacular radio station. I was surprised to hear all these and on calling the returning officer, Mr. Erick Okeyo, his replies confirmed that there was some fishy dealings going on. I rush to the counting venue, Macalder Divisional Offices, only to be told he had left with the said aspirant in a police land rover's escort. This simple announcement compromised the entire voting process and everything collapsed.
We as members of ODM dwell in a desire for democracy and we cannot afford to go against the same. We cannot even contemplate plunging into this level of corruption if we aspire to a government zero-tolerating the vice. We are determined to give Kenyans a peoples' president through a peoples' parliamentarians. I want to assure your office that the people of Nyatike have not got their representative as at now. I am pained to relay their message to your good office: THEY WANT A CHANCE TO ELECT SOMEONE ACCOUNTABLE TO THEM. Sorry for this, but in all fairness, it is only good that you know their resolution. As an aspirant, my take was to represent my people, which I will never cease to do. The people of Nyatike were short-changed at the 2002 nominations and repeatedly their aspirations have been blocked this time round. They want a remedy from non other than your LORDSHIP JUSTICE RICHARD OTIENO KWACH-Chair National Elections Board.
In the absence of a credible voting, it remains a wonder how the Civic aspirants would be nominated. The mood in Nyatike is terrible and any of the selected aspirants will definitely find it hard to campaign on an ODM platform, something we verily do not want to happen. When the least qualified candidate is given the mantle, the masses may gang against the party and it is our responsibility as the representatives to bring this to your attention. The last meeting with them at the counting venue was telling. I as an aspirant stand firm with the party and wish our presidential candidate well, and that is why I MUST bring all these facts to your table. All the aspirants need to be brought round a table so that this matter is resolved in the interest of our party ODM, our presidential candidate HON. RAILA ODINGA, and above all our beloved constituency NYATIKE.
Yours Faithfully Elias Odhiambo Ratteng. =====================================================Joluo.com Akelo nyar Kager, jaluo@jaluo.com |
