Is Moi the right person to Advise Kenyans on political leadership? I am baffled by former President Moi's comments about spying on ODM and his "advise" to Rift Valley on right choice for political leadership. A few things I would like to mention about Moi's failures during his 24 years rule. Moi's initial vision for Kenya was a good one, no doubt about that. He had some great ideas on how to make Kenya a great nation. Bottom line is that he failed in all his initiatives and we cannot look back and give him credit for any of the failed projects because present day kenyans are not enjoying any benefits of these initiatives. Secondly, Moi equates Kibaki with a bus driver. He states that as a driver there are all sort of passengers in the bus including pick pockets. He also states that those who stole or mismanaged their own areas of jurisdiction should take the bite and not the president. However, we have to remind Mr. Moi that as the chief executive of the country one has to account for poor management within any ministry. If an institution's strategy fails the CEO gets fired and that brings me to my list of items that this former president who failed Kenya should take into account before he ever opens his mouth to advise any kenyan on political leadership. 1. The Nyayo school milk program failed within 3 years after he started it. 2. The Nyayo bus service project failed within 4-5 years after he started it. 3. The Nyayo wards projects failed within 4-5 years after he started it. 4. The government corp. restructuring process failed almost immediately he initiated it 5. Healthcare became impossibly affordable to ordinary kenyans during his rule, becoming worse during Kibaki's. 6. School fees became too expensive for ordinary kenyans during his reighn 7. Corruption became a common trend in Moi's administration 8. Law enforcement became corrupt and lost meaning during Moi's rule 9. Constituitonal defiance became a common trend amongst Moi's cronies. 10. Important Kenyans were killed and have not been accounted for to date. Now back to the point. Who was Moi's second in command then? Our very own President Kibaki. What does that tell us? There is a common trend and a justifiable historical perspective to the failures we are seeing today. Moi became so rich that all his sons and daughters and his grand children together with his great grand children are well taken care of. So is Kibaki's. What is in it for the ordinary kenyans that are being advised by these two to vote for a government that has miserably failed. Is Moi the right person to advise kenyans on good leadership? Where did Moi get his money from? can he tell kenyans how his family became so rich? Kibaki came to power on a platform to reform the country: 1. To eliminate tribalism - we are more divided today than we were before 2002 2. To eliminate corruption - we have seen anglo-leasing type of scandals 3. To change the constitution within 100 days - No constitution is in place 5 years down the road 5. To make healthcare affordable - ordinary kenyans cannot afford to go to hospital, leave a lone pay registration fee for out-patient clinical care 6. To povide more collaborative leadership using the structures in place, transform provincial administration to make it more relevant to the changing dynamics.- we are seeing a trend where the public service is used to divide kenyans and intimidate others who are criticize the adminsitration ODM is the answer for Kenya. A vote for ODM is a vote for Kenya's future place in the world economics. Julius Okelo Joluo.com Akelo nyar Kager, jaluo@jaluo.com |
