ALEGO USONGA TO GO FOR THREE PIECE VOTE AS D-DAY DRAWS NEAR. BY SHEM KOSSE With less than ten days to general election, the Alego Usonga constituency appears fully set to cast their votes for civic, parliamentary and presidency in an ODM ticket. A visit to Alego coupled with an interview carried by this journalist reveals that majority of the voters in the vast constituency have decided to make such a move in order to accord the ODM flag bearer Raila Odinga a sizable number of legistors which they view as requisite and crucial for any political party, in terms of National House business. The constituents’ decision comes amid backdrop of the similar sentiments echoed by both the ODM pentagon member who is also the party’s torch bearer running mate Hon Musalia Mudavadi and Luo Nyanza campaign team headed by Hon Eng Philip Okundi, former MP, Rangwe. They duo reportedly urged the staunch supporters to vote for not only Raila in the party’s ticket but also accord both civic and parliamentary nominees the same treatment arguing that this will strengthen the party and give Raila smooth sailing in the offing 9th parliament. There has been a widespread disenchantment emanating from the three main political parties-ODM, ODM-K and PNU-sparked by their respective preliminary elections, which was marred by massive irregularities. Flawed primaries saw some victors being declared losers and vice versa, triggering a flood gate of defection of aspirants to fringe parties with a clarion call to their respective supporters “No Three Piece Vote!”. This has been a bitter pill that major political parties’ echelons have been struggling to swallow alongside devising shrewd mechanisms to overcome. And if the foregoing in Alego Usonga is something to bank on, then Mombassa based international business magnate Edwin Yinda who is the areas ODM nominee is just but few yards to the 9th parliament. Its worth noting that its dramatic change of events to the advantage of pragmatic Yinda who has been a perennial victim of three piece vote, despite of his unrivalled development record, in the constituency, running to decades. And it has been taking its toll on grounds that he has been gunning for the seat in a party (Kanu) ticket that is unpopular in Luo Nyanza, since the advent of multiparty politics. But in this electioneering year positive fate appears to be zeroing in on Yinda who is largely seen as the leading parliamentary candidate in a popular party, ODM, in the area. Political pundits have it that not even divine intervention and sustained onslaught will make it easy for one to unseat the hardworking ,wealthy Yinda in the near future if he happens to clinch the seat.
