RE: ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS TO KENYA’S STALEMATE: Secession, Constitutional Reform, Military Coup Joram, Martin Luther King Jr. preached nonviolence. While we want democracy in Kenya, we want a Kenyan-made democracy. We need not adopt all facets of American democracy. We must take what is good and discard what is bad. A military coup should not even be on the table as a solution. Kenyans want to live in a democracy, not in a police state. We have already seen, after all, what a good job our military and police have done in Kenya so far... All people, and not just Kenyans, should be on gaurd against the global threat that is the military industrial complex. We do not want to live in a society in which a few individuals thrive on war to the detriment of the majority. Frankly, we are shocked that anyone would put this forward as a solution. This would, we think, only worsen matters not improve them. Now, if the six out of eight provinces that voted for Odinga want to secede away from the two Kibaki enclaves, then this might be an alternative to a new election. Let us put our energies behind a new election for now and look at secession as a last resort. As Lucia and others have noted, the Kenyan diaspora could contribute money toward a new election. The EU and other western powers, if they truly believe in democracy, must give the "aid" money that they will not be giving to the Kibaki regime to the people of Kenya--that is, toward a new election.
